The latest world record for the fastest Rubik’s Cube-solving robot was set in May 2025 by a team of undergraduate students from Purdue University. Their creation dubbed the “Purdubik’s Cube,” solved a standard 3×3×3 Rubik’s Cube in an astonishing 0.103 seconds, significantly surpassing the previous record of 0.305 seconds held by Mitsubishi Electric’s TOKUFASTbot.
The Purdubik’s Cube robot utilizes advanced machine vision to recognize the cube’s colors and employs custom algorithms to determine the optimal solution path. Its mechanical design includes metal arms capable of executing rapid and precise movements, allowing it to solve the puzzle faster than the average human blink, which takes between 200 to 300 milliseconds.
Due to the immense speed and force involved, the team engineered a custom internal core for the Rubik’s Cube to maintain its structural integrity during operation. This innovation was necessary because standard cubes could not withstand the robot’s rapid manipulations.
Guinness World Records officially recognized the Purdubik’s Cube for its unprecedented speed. The student team—from Purdue University’s Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Matthew Patrohay, Junpei Ota, Aden Hurd, and Alex Berta—initially showcased their robot at Purdue’s SPARK competition in December 2024, where it won first prize.
The project was completed within a single semester as part of a senior design class, leveraging the students’ co-op experiences and corporate sponsorships. The team continues to explore pushing the speed even further, aiming to break the 100-millisecond barrier.
This achievement not only highlights robotics’ capabilities in solving complex tasks at incredible speeds but also underscores the innovative potential of student-led engineering projects.
